This blog is all about FreeSpirit and I, a journey that began with our joining in July 2012.
FreeSpirit is a Jarkan 34 (10.5 mt) centre cockpit fibreglass sloop designed by Kanga Birtles and built by Jarkan Pty Ltd in NSW. Her hull was laminated on 28.7.1980, the 16th Jarkan 34 built in those years.
With her purchase came a plan to sail to the South Pacific and live in the tropics as I’d often dreamed of doing at different times in my life. Though I’ve lived a long time on land, at heart I was always a sailor and here was an opportunity to fulfill that part of my life I had so long put off and neglected.
I was lucky that she was owned at the time by Scott and Sonja, two great people who also cared a great deal for her and have since become friends.
During the 3 years of their ownership they brought her back from a very run down state to a sailable condition. A fact I am very grateful for.
A notable recent owner of this boat was Bruce Fenney who took her in October of 2005 from Newcastle NSW arriving in Canarvon WA on June 2008. What is fortunate for us is that Bruce blogged on the Internet about his trip. She was known then as Isa Lei.
Over the coming weeks, months and years I hope to share with family and friends what its like to live aboard Freespirit, places we visit and experiences had along the way.
